CYRONITE
Freezing with cryonite using specialized equipment will kill bed bugs and the eggs on contact—it is an environmentally friendly option as it does not use chemicals. Because of this fact, some government agencies only permit the use of cyronite when treating their buildings. This method is also preferred by places where food is prepared because it is chemical free and does not require evacuation or closing of the premises while being administered. The technicians using cryonite must be trained to use this highly specialized equipment that is expensive to buy and maintain. Companies need to have several on hand as replacement parts can take several weeks to arrive from their manufacturer in Europe. Cryonite will also not penetrate as deeply as heat. Both heat and cryonite have no residual qualities and therefore bed bugs may reinfest the home immediately after treatment. This is a tool to be used in areas where insecticides and other treatment cannot be used or have failed.
Bed bugs are capable of tolerating temperatures, as low as 32°F for several days (Unsinger 1966).
Because of the high cost and limited penetration qualities of cryonite, steam should be an alternative in many cases.
If you are worried about televisions, computers, and other electronic equipment having bed bugs then short bursts of compressed air will allow you to find out if bed bugs are inside the equipment without the expense. These cans of compressed air may be found in the computer section of any store—we use them to clean keyboards and other surfaces. Be careful since they are designed to be used only in short bursts and only a few times. Always follow the directions on the label.
